Summary
I’m Chris, this is the Downtime Podcast and you’re tuned into our 2025 Whiteface / Lake Placid post-race show with Neko Mulally and Olly Morris for round 9 of the 2025 WHOOP UCI Mountain Bike World Series.
If you’re listening, that means that like me, you probably LOVE the sport and want to know as much as possible about what’s going on. That’s exactly what we are here to do.
Throughout the season, we’ll be bringing you analysis and insights that you won’t hear elsewhere.
However, as you probably know, the mountain bike industry isn’t in a great place right now and as a result, this series doesn’t have any brand support. The World Cup coverage is the most expensive thing I produce, as it often includes travel and I like to pay the guys for the expertise that they bring to the table.
So I’ve been funding it myself, along with the support of our wonderful Patreons.
If this show means something to you, and you want to help me keep it going, then please consider supporting us over on Patreon. You can sign up for as little as £3 a month at patreon.com/downtimepodcast. That’s less than the price of a coffee, but it makes a real difference. The more of you who chip in, the more likely it is that we can keep doing this.
I know times are tight. But if you value what we’re creating here, if it helps you stay connected to the sport you love, then now’s the time to chip in and help out.
This week saw Lake Placid showcase a brand new track on Whiteface mountain that challenged the world’s best. There were new winners, ongoing rivalries and plenty more. So sit back, hit play and listen to this Whiteface post-race show with Neko and Olly.

That's less than the price of a cup of coffee, but it makes a real difference and will help us get to the end of the season and through the winter into next year. It's been a rough year in many ways to be involved in the bike industry, but the support of our listeners has been a real highlight for me and has genuinely helped us keep this thing going, so thank you. All right, this week we headed to Lake Placid's Whiteface Mountain for the first time, |
| 0:54.9 | and they didn't disappoint us with a track that challenged the best in the world. We had a brand new winner, some nail-biting racing, championship battles won, and some extended, so there's plenty to talk about. Right at the start, we mentioned Luke's win being the first on a giant since Rob Warner in 1996. However, since recording this, it was brought to |
| 1:11.7 | our attention that John Tomac won four giant in Capron in 1997. However, the manufacturer of that |
| 1:17.3 | bike is a little bit of a grey area. Either way, it's been a long time. So, sit back, hit play |
| 1:22.8 | and listen to this Whiteface Mountain in Lake Placid post-race show with Nico and Olly. |
| 1:30.8 | Nico Malawi and Olly Morris. Welcome back. We're here in Lake Placid after an awesome day of racing and we'll hit the headlines first. |
| 1:38.1 | And Giant takes its first World Cup win unbelievably since Rob Warner in 1996 in Capron. |
| 1:46.1 | With Luke Myersmith taking not only his first-year World Cup win but his first podium two. Niko, what are your thoughts on that |
| 1:50.7 | performance? His race run was amazing. I probably didn't have him as my guy to win yesterday. |
| 1:59.8 | There was a few other guys that I thought were more capable, |
| 2:03.9 | but he outrode them all. |
| 2:05.8 | He didn't make any mistakes. |
| 2:07.6 | The surface of the track was so inconsistent with how loose it was |
| 2:12.9 | that it caught the best guys out. |
| 2:15.4 | And he delivered a perfect run and didn't make any mistakes |
| 2:19.7 | so 100% deserved and yeah very stoked for him yeah do you think like fitness played a part in that |
| 2:28.7 | like he is i think arguably one of the fittest guys in the pits like he's been really consistent over many years with training and working hard. |
| 2:36.9 | And also, I guess, sort of used to maybe tracks with a little less gradient |
| 2:40.6 | where he comes from in Australia. |
| 2:42.7 | I think that helped him on the bottom section. |
