Nuri Martinez has just announced she is resigning from her L.A.C.D. Council seat.

Much of the shock of this scandal was hearing someone like Nuri Martinez, who people once

viewed as a progressive, saying the things she said.

I identified a lot with her because we felt like we were unapologetically Latina.

I am a child of the working poor, and this is why I champion issues of the working poor.

Nuri was known for fighting on behalf of the working class and immigrant families, but

now she's known for something very different.

Her words just confirms how racist the other Mexican can be towards indigenous people.

We're going to tell you where Nuri came from and how her upbringing and her family's experiences

shaped her political views and ambitions.

We treated homelessness as a problem for housed people.

I had conversations with Nuri, and I said, Nuri, you know if we do this, you know it's

going to happen.

You know a bunch of black people are going to get arrested.

My politics come from a lived experience, that's it.

I know what it feels like to be poor.
