This week, I am really excited to welcome a guest that I have not personally met, but I have been a fan of for the last few months because I discovered a brand new podcast by her.

So this week, we are welcoming Ali Conti to the show. And before we get Ali on the conversation, I just want to tell you about her.

Ali is a journalist and licensed private investigator with frequent bylines and publications like The New York Times, The New Yorker, and The Atlantic.

After she graduated from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, Ali got her start covering crime and subcultures at the Miami New Times.

She then spent five years as the senior staff writer, Advice Magazine, which is the first long form profile of Martin Screly, The Farmer Bro.

Remember him? And she uncovered a nationwide scam being run on Airbnb. Ali has been a guest on public radio dozens of times and her very own narrative radio show Vigilante premiered in 2022 as a top 10 hit on the Apple podcast charts.

Ali also teaches magazine writing at the University of Florida and is currently at work on a book about the American loneliness epidemic.

Thanks for having me. Hearing that out loud gave me sort of an existential crisis. My career sort of all over the place.

You're like, I haven't accomplished enough. Is that what you're saying?

No, I'm going to say 99% of that is irrelevant to what we're going to be discussing today. But thank you.

It's absolutely not irrelevant. Believe me, it's deeply relevant. But I want to ask you this.

I like to ask my, all my guests who've come on are pretty much, I think, all true crime podcasters or have some connection to true crime.

It seems like so you got your start in Journalism covering crime and subcultures.

Was that something like, you're like, that's the beat I want? Or did you just kind of ended up there?
