This is Lattomatina. It's a summer morning in Indiana. The cicadas hum and the sun is already warm,

cooking the dry grasses like an oven.

Tammy and Yulebelle walked together through the tall prairie grass, farther and farther from the

trailers where they live.

They're nine years old, but they've been best friends since they were toddlers.

They spend every day of the summer together, swimming, making up dances, playing pretend, and going to the library.

Tammy uses a stick to swish the grass.

Huh!

Let's do something new today, Uulebel. Let's go somewhere.

Yulebel doesn't answer right away.

Truth is, there aren't a lot of places to go in an Indiana trailer park.

But she knows what Tammy means.

That summertime urge for something, anything to happen.

Yulebel tries to think of something cool to do.

Oh, we could go see a chunk of monkey snoozing in the pond, says Yulabelle.

Chunka Munka is a big fat snapping turtle with leathery skin and a biggy mouth.

Yulebel discovered him last summer.

At first she thought he was just a cool rock,

but when she called Tammy over, they figured out he was actually a giant turtle.
