In today's episode, we will be meeting the whole of Saint Germain, at the beginning of the 20th century, specifically in the year 1910,

in the case of which I will be talking about today, it came to me as a suggestion from Leslie Flores,

through Patreon.com, Diagonal Cranepot PR, who sent me some documents and files related to the same.

In the 1910, Puerto Rico found a period of important transition,

just about 10 years ago, the Laiz Foraker was signed, which established the government and became Puerto Rico,

and replaced the military government that was in control of the island since 1998 until 1900.

Puerto Rico became in the first territory, not incorporated in the United States,

with a United States governor named by the President himself.

In 1902, the United States government established a penal code for Puerto Rico,

which was practically a translation to Spanish, of the penal code of California State.

Under this penal code, the death penalty was applied as a punishment in Puerto Rico, until it was abolished in 1929.

In this very brief historical text, the facts of which I will be talking about in this episode.

I want to start talking about the protagonists of this story, Maria del Carmen Melendez and Angel Martel,

who lived in a house of the Barrio Rosario Peñón in the town of San Germán.

Maria del Carmen had 22 years, she was at home and among the limited information that she could obtain about her,

she mentions that she knew how to read and write.

Something that at that time was relevant, due to which at that time, about 70% of the population were alfabetas.

Angel Martel had 30 years, worked as a farmer and had a small farm, both had a son of two years,
