Summary

Imara is joined by L Morgan Lee, the first openly trans person to be nominated for a Tony Award. In their conversation, L Morgan reflects on how her groundbreaking role in A Strange Loop allowed her to more fully explore her own womanhood. She and Imara discuss the nuances of gender dysphoria, L Morgan’s path to acting, and her experiences of storytelling as a process of self-discovery. In an emotional conclusion, L Morgan opens up about what it’s like to have her childhood fantasy of sitting front row at an awards show come true.

trans stories to save trans lives. We're in the middle, of course, in Pride Month. And as you all

0:20.5

may have heard, there was recently a group of 31 men who were dressed in some sort of uniform altogether, arrested in Idaho on their way to a pride event. Those 31 men were a part of a group called the Patriot Front.

0:39.2

And although authorities are not releasing a lot of details about it,

0:43.0

what they are telling us is that they were intent on disturbing a pride.

0:49.5

So this is just another reminder that as we move through this month of celebration and fun and reveling

0:55.7

in who we are, that we pay attention to everything around us, given the world that we are living in.

1:01.8

This also goes for those of you all who will be headed out on the streets when the abortion

1:08.2

ruling comes down. Either way, I'm sure there will be demonstrations.

1:12.0

So just be safe, y'all, and make sure that you're paying attention and taking care of each other.

1:16.5

And when you're going out, please make sure you have a safety program and a safety plan, program and plan with your friends to keep each other safe because that's the only way it will happen

1:29.5

is for us to keep each other safe.

1:32.8

But despite the fact that there are people who are attempting to dampen our shine this

1:38.3

month with all these types of attacks that we described and others at a legislative

1:42.1

and others that are just mean on the internet,

1:45.3

we continue to thrive. Now, as you may have heard Michael R. Jackson's musical, a strange

1:52.1

loop won best musical at the Tonys this week. Now, it's produced, written, and acted by queer

1:58.1

people, and it's a musical about a black, fat queer man, writing a play

2:03.0

about a black, fat gay man. All of these representations are not normally seen on the stage,

2:09.1

let alone do they garner a Tony, but that happened. Now, it also made history in several other

2:16.0

ways, ensuring that Jennifer Hudson went into the halcyon of performers by getting an egot.

2:23.9

Now, what's an egot? That's an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony because she was a producer on a strange loop, so she got a statue for that, putting her in that extremely rare category. And even more important
