The concept of faith trips me up sometimes. And when I say faith I don't mean religion. Faith feels different to me.

It's an internal compass, a spiritual instinct that guide you in life.

And if I'm being honest, I've never had a strong sense of it.

I admire those who do, who was steadfast in who they are

and what they believe. Me? My desire to open my mind to the otherworldly and the strange makes me

question just about everything. When I was a kid, I used to talk about that stuff with my friend

Woody. He lived down the street from grandma and was what I call a belief collector, someone who jumped between religions and practices, and poured himself into each one he picked up.

Anyway, last year I was working on a script that dealt with a lot of this kind of stuff, so I decided to

reach out to Woody. We hadn't spoken in years, but I know he'd have some good points, and he

was that kind of friend where you can just pick up where you left off. But when I rang him up,

a nurse answered his phone, told me Woody had been brought to a hospital in Alaska that

very morning, and he wasn't in

good shape. Like I said, I hadn't spoken to Woody in years, but childhood friendships

die hard, and I knew he didn't have much family left, so I decided to visit him and see how I

could help. I flew to Juneau right then and there.

Then I drove a rickety rental to some town in the boonies.
