Did you ever wonder why the returns desk at most department stores is as far away as possible from the front door?

Maybe to get you to cross the store and see all the tempting merchandise on your way to returning those two small jeans, perhaps.

While no retailer likes having merchandise returned, returns can have an upside, more

foot traffic. The more often you physically walk into a store, the more likely you are to make a

purchase, which brings us to returns as a competitive advantage. And a shrewd move on the part of

Coles, the discount department store chain. Last week, Coles announced that shoppers can return items they bought on Amazon at any of

Cole's 1,100-plus locations.

That's a big deal for both businesses.
