Summary

The world can be a hard, inhospitable, downright hostile place, and people can quite often be less than kind. Yet Martha says that by practicing what she calls “kindness in motion,” we can start to change the whole complexion of the world.  Martha defines kindness in motion as “kindness while doing things” and she’s sharing how to do it in this episode of The Gathering Room. As Martha describes it, all of our perceptions come through the filter of the mind. The voice in our heads that we think is coming from the outside actually isn’t. So, as she tells us, “we can unilaterally shift the screen inside the head so that it only brings kindness.”  This means that if there's something that's frustrating you, as you go through it, be as kind to yourself as you would be to a very vulnerable child who has never tried it before, using what Martha calls Kind Internal Self Talk. Tell yourself things like: You are okay. You’re doing so well. You're doing things a lot of people couldn't do.  This is amazing. This is going to work out fine. There’s always a place where you can be kind to yourself, Martha says, and soon you’ll start to see your self-kindness reflected back to you from others. To hear some inspiring stories of kindness in motion (plus a couple that might crack you up), tune in for the full episode, where Martha will also lead you through her Silence, Stillness, and Space meditation. Be extra kind to yourself and join her!

All right.

Welcome back.

0:11.5

I'm welcoming myself back because I took a few weeks off to go and teach some seminars in Africa,

0:19.6

as you may have heard. Some of you have been there,

0:23.8

so I know you heard. And I had a wonderful time. I was feeling a little, I left not feeling my

0:32.3

absolute best physically. And I thought, oh, I've got a bug. It'll pass. It didn't really pass. It was,

0:39.5

I just felt a little physically through the whole, now, three weeks I was there. But emotionally,

0:49.3

there's just, it's such a wonderful, I mean, it's such an incredible place to be. And the people

0:54.1

who come are so

0:55.1

wonderful, and I love coaching, and it's just generally a fantastic time. So I didn't really mind,

1:03.2

but I had to take extra good care of myself, right? Because I was feeling a little under the

1:09.8

weather, and I didn't want anybody's coaching experience to be,

1:14.7

you know, I didn't want it to detract from their experience. So I was doing a lot of what I call

1:24.0

kind internal self-talk. I was like, okay, this will be all right. It's fine. That was

1:30.2

okay. You didn't handle that as well as you wanted to, but I think the person is kind and forgiving.

1:36.3

I was basically keeping up a patter of kindness to myself the whole time. And on the way back, I was going through the airport

1:48.8

lines and thinking, why is everyone so nice? Like, I don't remember the airport as being so nice.

1:57.8

I mean, everything, everyone is so darn nice. And then I realized that,

2:05.1

objectively, they weren't being that nice. There were the big gangs of like, you know,

2:15.4

big hunters who work for a oil business and they're going to Africa to kill things.
