It was a beautiful July morning in 1984, but all was not well.

As Barbara Speaker brewed a pot of coffee in her apartment,

she tried her best to remain calm.

She knew she was probably overreacting,

but ever since her upstairs neighbors had seemingly vanished, she'd been on edge.

Harvey and Deborah Dubs were a sweet young couple,

just starting their lives together in San Francisco with their one-year-old son.

Barbara knew it was possible that they'd just taken a spontaneous trip out of town,

but it wasn't like them. They would have told her about it first.

But then, just above her, she heard the sounds of footsteps coming from the Dubs'

apartment, relieved she headed upstairs to greet her friends.

However, instead of the young family, Barbara ran into a complete stranger.

A young man in his 20s walked out of the Dubs' home,

carrying a bulky double bag in each hand.
