It was a balmy summer's night on the west bank of the Sacramento River.

After a long night of tending bar, 34-year-old Virginia Mokal was looking forward to getting

home to bed.

Though it was a Wednesday night, some of the tavern's patrons were drinking like it was

the weekend.

One young couple in particular caught Virginia's attention.

They'd arrived tipsy and seemed determined to drink each other under the bar.

The man, Stephen, struck Virginia as outgoing and a little arrogant.

He kept telling her that it was his birthday, demanding free drinks, in a tone that was

not quite playful.

Virginia was also openly flirting with her in front of his girlfriend.

Virginia laughed it off, resisting the urge to roll her eyes.

She was used to guys like him, so convinced that they were God's gift to women.

Still, when the couple finally staggered out of the bar, she couldn't help feeling relieved.

Just before 2am, Virginia waved goodbye to the last few patrons to leave the bar and

started closing up for the night.
