Summary

In 1941, Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto was the most hated man in America. As the architect of Japan’s December 7th surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States military decided Yamamoto had to die by any means necessary. Two years later, over the jungles of Southeast Asia, a daring aerial ambush gave the American people the closure they craved.  But who was Yamamoto really? Did his death have any impact on the outcome of the war? And who actually landed the killing blow? After the success of “Operation Vengeance”, as it came to be known, two American flyboys would become locked in a decades-long feud over who deserved the credit for avenging one of the deadliest days in American history.  A visionary Admiral. A longshot mission. A broken friendship. SOURCES: Davis, Donald A. Lighting Strike: The Secret Mission to Kill Admiral Yamamoto and Avenge Pearl Harbor. 2005.  Lehr, Dick. heard of before, World War II.

0:21.7

Now, in full transparency, I generally try and avoid the Second World War on this show.

0:26.7

Not because it isn't totally fascinating and engrossing.

0:29.8

I, like every other history nerd on the planet, love World War II.

0:33.8

But it tends to dominate history coverage in a way that few other topics do.

0:37.7

It sucks up a lot of oxygen, pulling interest away from lesser known yet equally fascinating topics.

0:44.2

But I decided to make an exception for this episode because it's a story that I've had my eye on for a while.

0:49.9

Today, we're going to be talking about something called Operation Vengeance.

0:53.9

Operation Vengeance was a military operation conducted by the United States to achieve the death of one man,

not the capture of a piece of territory or the defeat of a specific army.

1:05.6

Its goal was to assassinate one single individual.

1:10.0

At the time, the target of this mission was probably the most hated person in America,

1:16.1

with the exception of maybe Adolf Hitler.

1:18.7

His name was Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto.

1:22.9

Now, students of this time period will recognize that name immediately.

1:27.3

But if you aren't familiar,

1:28.7

Yamamoto was the man who planned the infamous sneak attack on Pearl Harbor. Over night, he

became a boogeyman for the United States, a figure on par with Osama bin Laden in the wake of
