What's the worst place you've ever lived?

It was the cheapest place we could find in Cincinnati, Ohio last minute.

This is writer and activist Linda Tarado.

So it was kind of a dingy little basement, and the way they'd put it together, you couldn't

get the oven door down all the way because they built a wall to create like a galley kitchen.

It was slightly more depressing than that, but you learn to kind of put the bright face on it where you can.

Linda Tarado and her husband have lived in a lot of crappy places over the years.

They moved to Cincinnati so he could go to college on the GI Bill.

But some kind of government paperwork snafu delayed their housing stipend.

They started to run out of money. And then things got even worse.

Summer storms in Ohio are kind of torrential. And the landlord hadn't maintained the drains

properly during a summer storm.

And so, of course, we're in the lowest place in the building. The drains back up, ruin everything that we owned.

And that was how I came to be living in a weekly motel pregnant on WIC.

you can be doing everything right and still be just one paycheck,

one disaster away from being out on the street.

And your landlord is unlikely to help you, at least not in any way you'd want.
