Summary

Mark Manson credits staying grounded to maintaining a beginner’s mindset, ever seeking higher peaks instead of resting on achievements. He advises diversifying your self-worth across many areas like knowledge, generosity and relationships to buffer setbacks. Manson explains that while career forms part of identity, intimate bonds drive happiness more than anything, though unstable if solely defining one’s worth. Building self-esteem across pillars better equips us to show up fully in relationships and life.

expand it not dim their light?

0:18.9

Honestly, the thing that ultimately worked for me is to just kind of maintain that bottom of

0:25.3

the mountain mindset you know there's like a famous cliche about you know there's you

0:31.6

get to the top of the mountain you realize there's a taller mountain behind it you know and so it's like figuring out what that taller mountain is right and like and a lot of times you have you just invent it like you just pick something out of their area you're like know what, like I'll make this my mountain, right?

And for me, it's been psychologically very, very beneficial to find a way to keep that and not put all of my identity and self-worth into that because if I did that then I'd be terrified to get out of bed in the morning.

So when you were saying that for those just listening you're pointing at the book,

1:14.0

What should we put our identity and self-worth into if it's not into our accomplishments, our career, or our wealth.

1:28.9

I personally believe that you should treat your identity or your self-worth the same way you treat a good

1:35.9

investment portfolio which is you diversify it across a lot of things that are not

1:40.1

correlated to one another. The same way you know you want to split up your

1:43.4

money between stocks and bonds and cash and real estate because those things

1:48.1

don't always move in the same direction at the same time you want to put your

1:51.8

self-esteem and things that that aren't going

1:54.4

to go north or south at the same time. That's interesting, yeah. Yeah.

1:57.2

Like for someone listening or watching what does that look why kind of day-to-day life?
