Our first guest on today's program is Dr. Kevin Porteus, professor of politics and director

of American Studies here at Hillsdale College.

With talk about the president's massive build-back better program still simmering, we look

back to another massive expansion of government from a previous president, The Great

Society and Lyndon B. Johnson. And Dr. Porteus

actually teaches part of a online course, Constitution 201, specifically on this subject. If you want

to go and find out more, we'll give you what we have today. Dr. Porteus, so when we talk about

the great society and LBJ's great society, what do we mean when we refer to it?

Well, the Great Society was Lyndon Johnson's vision for the country. And this is something

George H.W. Bush talked about the vision thing. And that was a common perception or understanding

that if you were going to be a successful president,

you had to have a vision of how you were going to transform the society.

And so, you know, in the 20th century, you've had Theodore Roosevelt and his new nationalism,

Wilson and the new freedom.

You have the New Deal, the Fair Deal, the New Frontier, the Great Society with Lyndon

Johnson, and sort of so on down the line.

And there's always this perception that we need to transform society.

And this was Johnson's way of doing it.
