Summary

Over the last few years, I have returned more often than I could have imagined to the work of Reinhold Niebuhr and his vision of Christian Realism. Between the rise of Trump, growing disappointment in Biden, and inaction on the most pressing issues... to name a few... my inherent optimism in the democratic experiment has waned.  So, I decided to have Dr. Kevin Carnahan on the podcast to unpack Christian Realism and how this particular theological lens could help me wrestle with my growing disease. Kevin Carnahan is Professor of Philosophy and Religion at Central Methodist University in Fayette, MO. He recently stepped down after five years of service as co-editor of the Journal of the Society of Christian Ethics, is the former president of The Niebuhr Society, and author of multiple books and articles on religion, ethics, and politics. He lives in Columbia, MO with his wife and two daughters. For more fast, nerdy fun hot takes from Kevin, check out his TikTok:) Kevin's recommendations for those wanting to get into Niebuhr are Langdon Gilkey's On Niebuhr and Reinhold Niebuhr and Christian Realism by Robin Lovin. You can also check out these two previous episodes with Scott Paeth on Niebuhr: On Reinhold & Richard Niebuhr and Why Go Niebuhr? What is it like to think with and in that tradition of Christian ethics? And honestly,

0:52.3

here's why. Recently, in the last few years, I've returned more and more

0:58.0

to the work of Reinhold Niebuhr between the rise of Trump, my growing disappointment and Biden,

1:04.6

inaction on so many pressing issues. I just thought maybe the kind of optimism that I'm oriented towards naturally is problematic.

1:14.3

Maybe there's more to learn from Reini and the perspective that he's kind of inspired and shaped.

1:20.9

And Kevin is an excellent articulator of it.

1:24.0

And we have a bunch of fun in this conversation.

Plus, we talk about laundry and Fabriz.

1:31.1

And my frustration with just Duke in general as a Wake Forest alumni and the ACC basketball fan.

1:40.4

But this is a fun one, and here's what we're going to do.

1:44.0

We're going to have this conversation about Christian realism, and here's what we're going to do. We're going to have this

1:45.1

conversation about Christian realism, and then Kevin's going to come back on soon, and we're

1:50.1

going to use that framework to think through what's going on in Israel, Palestine, the violence,

1:55.5

and that issue. A number of y'all have kept asking, like, Trip, are we going to talk about this?

1:59.2

You're going to do something about it. And, you know, I tend to do episodes that are, you know, evergreen is the internet word. You know, ones that kind of come back to over time. But I thought, let's spend some time looking at this perspective and then talk to Kevin, who's also published a whole bunch on like just war theory and these

2:17.6

kind of things, and then try to apply it and how does that help us process theologically

2:22.2

what's going on currently. But this is a bunch of fun. I hope you enjoy it. Now, before we hop

2:29.6

into this interview, I want to say two things. Number one, in a few weeks, we are going to launch our next
