0:00.0	I first met President Keone Kauwe when I interviewed he and his wife Monica for a cover story for
0:06.6	LDS Living Magazine in 2020. At the time, they had not yet begun their time as president and
0:12.8	first lady of BYU Hawaii. Five years later, they invited me to come to the campus of BYU
0:19.0	Hawaii to speak. And while there, I couldn't shake the thought that I wish all members of the church
0:23.6	could visit the campus of BYU Hawaii, as well as the Polynesian Cultural Center,
0:29.6	to see the light in the students' eyes and to learn more about what makes that campus so special.
0:35.6	So, as much as I wish we could all take a Hawaiian vacation together,

0:46.6	S.K. Kauway, the third, is the 11th president of Brigham Young University, Hawaii. Prior to assuming
0:53.3	the presidency in July 2020, he was a chair
0:56.3	of the biology department and dean of graduate studies at BYU and Provo. He earned his bachelor's
1:02.8	degree in molecular biology and a master's in population genetics from BYU. He also received a PhD in
1:10.5	evolution, ecology, and population biology from BYU. He also received a PhD in evolution, ecology, and population biology from
1:13.7	Washington University in St. Louis, where he completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Alzheimer's
1:20.4	disease genetics. His professional focus has been on solving the genetic basis of Alzheimer's
1:26.6	disease.
1:27.7	President Kauway is of Hawaiian, Chinese, Portuguese, Maori, and Northern European ancestry.
1:34.7	He is the fourth great-grandson of Kaliohano, one of the first converts to the Church of Jesus
1:40.8	Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hawaii.
