Summary

Kenny Kane is a life-long performer and coach who is fueled by improving quality of life for people in principled ways. He bought CrossFit Los Angeles in 2014 with a vision to build a unified coaching team and the business to support it. The business rebranded in 2017 as Oak Park, a nod to the Kenny’s roots in Santa Rosa, CA as well as a symbolic transition to something evergreen. His dream has always been to create an environment where he can be a student and learn entirely new things from the people within it. As the Oak Park coaches and community continue to evolve, that dream becomes more of a reality. Kenny has an extraordinarily diverse background. He grew up in a family fitness business with a mother in the Swimming Hall of Fame and a father who was an officiant at the Olympics. At 15, he earned his Black Belt and began his coaching career as a martial arts instructor. Kenny attended UC Davis where he played soccer, ran track, and competed in triathlons. He then went on to teach physical education and drama in his hometown while training for the Olympic Trials. A career ending running injury pushed him to shift focus to stand-up comedy and private training. Kenny spent 14 years splitting time between training clients and touring the world. He performed standup and gave motivational talks while simultaneously transforming people as a coach. Kenny retired from performing in 2013 to do what he loves. He now dedicates all of his professional time to coaching and the business endeavors that support it. • This episode of The Ready State Podcast is brought to you by Momentous, the largest supplier of nutritional support to college, pro-sports teams, and the military in the world. When we travel, the one supplement we bring along is Momentous Collagen. We can't control a lot when we travel, so we focus on walking a TON, like 15k-20k steps per day and getting collagen on board first thing in the morning. So let me just dive into my little kind of personal history.

I just got back from a little consulting trip, working with a big team in Europe and then did a little speaking at a conference.

And Juliet and I just had this kind of crash.

We're going to zip to Europe and leave our kids behind.

And one of the things that goes out the window there is our

0:37.7

sleep we know and our exercise, because we may or may not have access to gyms. So the one thing

0:42.2

we focus on is walking. And when I say walking, we don't just walk like 5,000 steps. We really

0:47.0

try to get our 15 to 20,000 steps. One is that it really helps us sleep to accumulate enough

fatigue that we actually want to have that sleep pressure and go to sleep.

And two, it's the one thing we can sort of control.

0:59.9

We're just going to walk everywhere, then eat the pastry, and then walk everywhere.

So when I travel, believe it or not, the only supplement we take is collagen because it's one of those things where I know that if I can get the collagen in the

morning that my feet, my connective tissues, my all of those things are going to be calling for

it and sucking it up. I know I'm going to be eating all the whole foods, but that collagen is really

1:23.3

a simple thing for us to manage. Now, it's less simple, of course, when I take a powder through,

1:29.3

you know, something like security, but I feel like that's part of the adventure, right? It's like, hey, what are you doing here? Hey, I'm taking care of my connective tissues. I'm not doing anything nefarious. But I just want to put on record that even on your non-training days, when you're just trying to walk or if you're trying to walk to sleep more or just have better foot health,
