Summary

Kelly created a self-image as a party girl that became eventually an uncomfortable way to live. Self-centered partners who also drank problematically appeared one after another. She leaned on others for her self-worth and thought, “if you like me then I’m less broken." Now she realizes that her biggest relationship problem was with herself. Today Kelly is standing in her authenticity and learning to love and appreciate herself as a sober woman. “It’s one of the best things that I’ve ever done for myself.” “Therapy is like peeling the layers back trying to get to the root issue, because if you don’t get to the root out you’re likely to relapse. 1:08.6	much. Now, you have a anniversary coming up, I think, in a couple of months here,
1:14.4	don't you? My sober date is July 6, 2019. So I will have 20 months next month. That's awesome. Well, I'm excited
1:27.0	that you're here to tell us about how it's been
1:29.7	and what you've learned through this time. So I'm going to turn the mic over to you. So,
1:33.5	Kelly, tell us about yourself and tell us your story. Thank you so much. I am 47 years old,
1:40.8	and I live in the beautiful city of Charlotte, North Carolina. I have one son who is now a junior
1:48.6	in college and my sober date again is July 6th, 2019. I grew up in a small town in Illinois and as a
1:59.4	child I don't remember there being any alcohol in our home.
2:03.7	We're seeing either of my parents drank.
2:06.9	The only family members I recall drinking at all were my two uncles who were also alcoholics.
2:14.2	During my childhood, I remember there being a lot of tension and arguing between my parents going on in the home.
2:22.3	I was always scared of upsetting my mother and was constantly walking on eggshells, which caused me a ton of anxiety.
2:31.4	Eventually, my parents divorced when I was nine years old.
2:35.0	My mom immediately remarried without even introducing my brother and I to the man she was marrying.
2:43.0	My stepfather was extremely abusive, emotionally, verbally, and physically.
2:49.0	At least half of the time he would be under the influence of alcohol.
