What is the point of the Labour Party?

Now, what is the wing of the party you happen to hail from?

Blair Wright, Corbynite, Soft Left, just plain old Labour?

Surely, surely, you can agree.

That Labour Party that doesn't support lifting children out of poverty

is essentially a waste of time.

Now, a little recap on why Labour was founded.

At the turn of the 20th century, there were two parties of government,

the Tories and the Liberals.

They represent the big business, the landlords, the rich.

So the unions, the trade unions, got together to found a political party

to give those who labour a voice in parliament on the basis

that there was only so much unions on the own could do

to improve the lot of the working class.

Now, this was, of course, the Labour Party,

which, after the country was ruined by World War II,

and economically, at the time, was on its knees,

a far more parlour state than it is today,

it founded the welfare state, the National Health Service,

and the most ambitious housing programme in our country's history.

Now, whatever my criticisms of new Labour under Tony Blair

and Gordon Brown decades later, they did lift a million children

...
