And Kirstama today took himself off to Essex with the shadow cabinet ranked in rows behind him,

standing to applaud as Kirstama set out in shirt sleeves, rolled up what his ideas were for what Labour would do in government. Six pledges. Don't call them pledges. No, not six pledges. They're not six pledges.

I was with the Labour team last night and the first thing they said was don't call them pledges.

We're not doing pledges. We're calling them baby steps or first steps, little steps.

They're not promises, which obviously allows you a bit more wriggle room.

It allows you to sort of make your intentions known and your priorities known, but not to be chased down in the way that Rishi Sunak was, for example, on the small boats.

And so the six pledges, very reminiscent in one way of Blair's five pledges in 1997,

but I think we can say even sort of fewer numbers, right?

Yes, because all we've got are two specific pledges, which is the promise on recruiting additional teachers, 6,500, and the 40,000 more

appointments each week for people who are waiting to see someone on the NHS. So those are
