Summary

Former MEP Alex Phillips kicks off today's show by delving into the morning's top headlines as an alleged Russian spy ring whose agents are said to have posed as journalists to carry out surveillance on targets in London and Europe has been broken up by the Metropolitan Police. Founder of Fair Fuel UK Hoard Cox joins Mike shortly after to discuss Sir Keir Starmer's ULEZ U turn as Labour scrap policy plans for clean air zones, similar to London’s Ulez expansion, across the country. Writer for the Spectator Gavin Mortimer returns to The Independent Republic to discuss the latest from the migrant crisis, Tasmina Ahmed Sheik from The Alba Party joins shortly after tyo discuss why a poster depicting Rishi Sunak as a vampire feasting on Scottish oil has been rejected over fears it is “slanderous” towards the Prime Minister. Media giant Global refused the artwork from Alex Salmond’s Alba Party, which displayed a cartoon Mr Sunak alongside the words “No wonder he’s laughing. He’s got Scotland’s oil” with black droplets coming from oversized fangs. And  Chef & Restaurateur Anthony Worral Thompson closes the show to discuss whether Britons should embrace tipping after an online survey and why he is stepping away from the Greyhound pub after 18 years. Welcome to Wednesday morning. Now in the old days there'd be Prime Minister's questions, but of course

0:09.4

there isn't any Prime Minister's questions. Why? Because summer holidays have ensued. I've always

0:14.6

wondered why Parliament cannot actually sit throughout the summer holidays. I mean, would it be any

0:19.0

problem for people to take a couple of

0:20.8

weeks off, take their family abroad, hop off to Ibitha, go to, I don't know, Farrow, head off to

0:26.7

Budapest, you know, have a Vienna holiday, go to the Philippines, go to Maui, if you wish,

0:32.4

all sorts of places where you could go on holiday, and yet the business of Parliament could

0:36.7

still go on. There will be people who will say, well, the thing is, you know, there are still people working inside their parliament and inside the Palace of Westminster,

0:44.3

and of course lots of MPs are doing lots of very important work in their constituencies.

0:48.3

Yes, yes, yes, I know all that. But why can't we still keep having proper debates in parliament proper time for people to have you know

0:56.8

individual bills discussed possibilities of policy being discussed i mean we're in the midst of all

1:03.3

kinds of problems at the moment we've got an inflation crisis we've got a wage spiraling crisis

1:08.3

we've got a migrant crisis we've got all sorts of other crises in the NHS, and the railway workers are still on strike.

1:15.9

You know, things are not going particularly well, and yet everybody's gone on holiday.

1:20.5

The roads are a little bit quieter, which is one good thing, but to be honest, is it any wonder why Britain is kind of grinding to a halt and nobody

1:28.3

can get anything done?

1:29.3

I hear story after story after story of people telling me, well, I tried to do this, but then

1:34.3

nobody answered the phone, so I just gave up.

1:36.3

That is pretty much the parable of modern Britain.

1:39.3

We'll talk about that throughout the course of the show.

1:42.3

We'll talk about Russian spies.
