Welcome to the You'll hear of podcast. My name is Adam Manus. Today joining you for a very special solo episode. As we're sheltering in place, we've been

0:22.2

thinking about different ways that we can practice, that we can work on, our playing, on becoming

0:30.5

a better musician, a better artist, a better practiser. And I wanted to share some thoughts

0:36.0

with you about how to stay motivated to practice on a

0:40.4

regular basis. I hear some of the same issues again and again from our open studio members

0:47.8

about practicing and about maintaining a regular routine. And it goes something like this, usually.

0:55.2

There's so much to work on.

0:57.2

I have so far to go.

1:01.5

I don't know what to practice sometimes,

1:03.8

or sometimes I have too much to practice,

1:06.5

and I just get overwhelmed,

1:09.0

and I end up not doing anything. And so I want to talk about a very

1:27.1

we're like, oh, if I had time, I'd practice five hours a day every day. But then you get a little more time to practice. Because even if you have a bunch of time, you know, when we're very busy, we're like, oh, if I had time, I'd practice five hours a day every day. But then you get a little extra time and you're like, well, I don't know. There's so much to do. And I can't possibly get everything in. I need to get in in the two hours I have. So maybe I'll just sit here on my phone for a while and then the whole day goes by and nothing happens.

1:45.7

So how can we stay motivated to get up to do it every day?

1:51.1

The technique is a very simple technique.

1:54.7

It's the simplest, actually.

1:57.3

It's to make it easy and make it obvious. So if you've been around our podcast and our

2:05.0

YouTube's the last few weeks, you know, I've been talking a little bit about this book by James

2:09.6

Clear called Atomic Habits, which is, it's a very popular book, all about making habits,

2:14.9

keeping habits. And one of the guiding principles of that book
