Close your eyes and imagine you're standing beneath a wide Hawaiian sky.

The air is warm and palm trees sway gently in the breeze.

You hear birds singing and waves breaking far away.

In front of you is a young princess walking through a garden filled with tropical flowers.

She wears a long dress and her posture is calm and graceful, but her eyes show deep thought.

She knows her home is changing and she knows her voice matters.

This is Princess Cayulani of Hawaii, a young leader whose life was filled with love for her people

and hope for her nation. Princess Kau Yulani was born on October 16, 1875 in Honolulu, on the island of Oahu.

Her full name was Victoria Ka Yulani Kalanuiya Hilapalapa, Kauekyu and Luna Lilo Clegghorn.

She was named after Queen Victoria of England and was part of the Hawaiian royal family.

Her mother was Princess Miriam Like-like, the sister of King Kalakawa, and Queen Liliwakalani.

And her father was Archibald Cleleghorn, a businessman from Scotland.

From the beginning, Kalywani lived between two worlds, Hawaiian tradition and Western culture.

Kaiulani grew up at a beautiful home called Ina Howe, an estate filled with bonion trees, peacocks, and open land.

She loved nature and animals, especially her peacocks, which became a symbol often connected

to her. As a child, she was curious, thoughtful, and gentle. She spoke Hawaiian and English and
