sector especially after the government raised the price of fuel by 50% at the

beginning of this year which led to the largest protest Kazakhstan has ever seen.

That price hike also led to the most violent protest Kazakhstan has ever witnessed.

While the recent protests were the largest and most violent protests in

Kazakhstan are nothing new. In 2019 protests led to the resignation of

President Nursalton Nazarbayev, leading to his hand-picked successor, the current president,

Kasim Jomart Tokayev.

Nasirbayev had been the only president

Kazakhstan had ever known since it won independence from the Soviet Union

back in 1991. But with

Tokayev in power and protests continuing, the new president granted new freedoms to

the Kazakh people when it comes to freedom of press and speech. President Tokayev is now blaming those very same freedoms

that he granted on this month's protest.
