I stood on the edge of the cliff, marveling at the terracotta canyons that stretched as far as

the eye could see.

My name is Kaya.

I'm 14 years old of the Anasazi tribe living in the ancient beauty of Mesa Verde,

a huge city built into the side of a cliff. Centuries ago my ancestors had discovered this canyon and cliff and had decided it would be an ideal place to build a city and live out the rest of their lives.

I hurried down a wooden ladder from one of the top floors of our cliff home, down two flights of stairs and into a stone building where my family was working on a new section which would act as a kitchen.

With simple tools in hand, they chipped away at the sandstone and laid new blocks for a wall.
