Summary

This week, Mike and Jay open the show with a look at the accusation of attempted rape leveled at Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh by Christine Blasey Ford. The Guys have a lot of differences of opinion on this issue, though they do agree on the importance of a process that is fair to both Professor Ford and Judge Kavanaugh. Next is a discussion of President Trump’s call to release intelligence related to the Russia investigation. Jay advances that argument that President Trump is lying when he said he hasn’t read the documents and that the president is timing his order for maximum media impact and the greatest political benefit. After that, the Guys talk about the latest in the ongoing trade war with China. Mike points out that the best possible outcome for the United States would be President Trump being right about his risky, unorthodox strategy. Jay adds that even if Trump is right regarding China, his trade strategy with our EU and Canadian allies still seems highly suspect. Then Mike and Jay discuss an important federal court ruling on political contribution disclosure rules. Mike thinks the ruling is both an example of what happens when Congress delegates too much authority to regulators, as well as a win for transparency. Jay agrees on the delegation issue, but has his doubts about the wisdom of the ruling, as well as whether it will be affirmed on appeal. Our listener mail question this week comes from Don, who asks if terms limits might make government more responsive and effective.   Help Mike decide the topic of his next book by taking this super-quick one question survey. (The survey is open until Friday, September 28.) Listener support helps make The Politics Guys possible. If you’re interested in supporting the show, go to politicsguys.com/support. Hey, everyone. Before we get today's show, I have a few quick announcements. The first one has to do with a new format.

0:06.3

From this point on, our Saturday weekend News Roundup show is going to be a little bit longer.

0:12.0

We're adding in one or depending on time, maybe two listener questions at the end of every show.

0:18.6

Now, typically, what we've done is we've kind of bunched up listener questions and done

0:22.5

them every once in a while in a listener mail episode that we air on Wednesdays.

0:27.7

We're doing away with that listener mail show, and we're also making some big changes

0:33.5

to those Wednesday interviews that we sometimes air.

0:37.4

What we've heard from you is that a lot of

0:40.5

the interviews are not really, I guess you could say, in the spirit of the politics guys,

0:46.1

kind of a bipartisan sort of thing. And so as soon as we get done airing the batch of interviews

0:52.6

that we've already conducted with folks.

0:55.0

We are only going to choose folks to talk to who embody that sort of spirit.

1:00.1

Now, that probably means fewer interviews, but they're going to be, I think, much more in line with the sort of thing that you come to the politics guys for.

1:08.9

Second change I want to tell you about is, over the next few weeks, we're going to be

1:13.2

introducing some new voices to the show.

1:15.7

To this point, we've been literally politics guys, a bunch of, well, middle-aged white guys

1:21.8

talking about politics.

1:23.4

We thought it was time to expand a little bit, to bring in some female voices, to bring in some

1:29.4

minority voices, that sort of thing. And so I've contacted some folks, and they've agreed to

1:35.8

come on the show as sort of a trial run as guest co-hosts. And it's really important if you

1:42.3

could let us know what you think about that. And again,

1:44.8

these will be coming up in the next few weeks. So let us know your impressions of them.
