Summary

A surprising bright spot amid the gloominess of the pandemic has been the surge of interest in getting pets.  People working from home, schooling their kids at home, or feeling lonely because of social distancing, are among those who’ve sought out canine companions.

Dog shelters, nonprofit rescues, private breeders and pet stores have been swamped with requests from people who’d like to foster, adopt or buy a dog.  Joining us on this episode is Kathy Callahan, who knows all about the current trend.  Kathy is certified professional dog trainer in Alexandria, Virginia and the author of the new book, 101 Rescue Puppies: One Family's Story of Fostering Dogs, Love, and Trust.

and trust. Kathy, thank you so much for joining us. Thank you so much for having me. I'm delighted to be

1:03.5

here in a chat with you guys about puppies and dogs. How did you and your family end up fostering

1:08.6

now more than 101 rescue puppies? Right. We are currently,

1:12.5

as I look at the eight frolicing in my yard right now with my daughter, we are currently at 184.

1:18.3

So it's a little, I know we sound like the crazy people. We didn't start. Seriously, eight years ago,

1:23.8

I was just a regular mom. But then we took one tiny little step and decided to

1:29.7

foster two puppies. We had actually lost one of our dogs. You know how that is? When your dog

1:34.3

dies, your house just feels a little sad, a little empty, but we weren't ready to bring in a new

1:38.8

PAC member. And somebody suggested fostering. I thought, oh, we could do that. So we took in two and we got hooked

1:46.5

because when you do this, it is, it just hits on all cylinders. You are doing something good.

1:54.1

It's a lot of fun. You end up seeing the best in people and it gives you something to do as a

1:59.8

family that has nothing to do with screens.

2:01.6

It gets you outside. So we started with those two puppies. Then we took a few more in that year.

2:07.7

Then we took in our first litter, which was a mom and her nursing babies. And that has kind of become

2:13.2

my thing. That is so rewarding for us to do. You take in these dogs that were, you know, a little bit

2:19.4

at risk and you give them a safe spot. That's what fostering is. So you're taking in dogs that,
