Summary

Joe and Alex are joined by Katherine Stewart, author of Power Worshippers: Inside the Dangerous Rise of Religious Nationalism. (Buy it here) We're all wondering how evangelicals can back Donald Trump, who embodies traits so antithetical to Christian values, and there's no one better to discuss that than Katherine Stewart. She talks about the role of fear in motivating Christian Nationalists, the increasing divide between secular liberals and the Christian right, why the evangelicals are such an important electoral group, and what the future holds for the GOP and Christian politics. Then, Joe shares some memories of the late Walter Mondale, and gives an update on a big race for Operation 147.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/that-trippi-show/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy Learn more about your ad choices. Well, you're actually, we've had two or three guests recently, Stuart Stevens and then James Fletcher, who was director of the film, the accidental president.

1:01.0

Both of them sort of explained how we all lack the imagination to see Trump happening in 2016.

1:11.1

And then still kind of lack the imagination about how far he would go and how far this is still likely to go.

1:19.0

And Nick O'Malley came on a few episodes ago and talked about how journalism and just sort of fragmentation of coverage out there is just sort of further making things tough to understand and seeing people go into their own niches.

1:49.6

obviously Christian nationalism the movement had a lot to do with what a lot of us didn't see coming

1:58.6

and how it's still, the scarier part was how it's still here. The scarier part was how it's still here and and how did Trump appeal to them?

2:07.1

How did it? What's the connection between him? This guy doesn't seem, you know, I think he seems to be not out of that value structure,

2:17.7

out of their value structure, but somehow was able to energize then in the way he was able to do.
