The time when he was at the Prisoner of War camp as a Soviet soldier.

He was a Soviet soldier and he got captured by the Germans after the Germans attacked

the Soviet Union in June of 1941.

And he, all the Jews were being killed, the Jewish soldiers were being killed.

And they were asked to step forward and they were going to be taken in shot.

And this other man who was not a Jewish man, but a friend of his, grabbed onto his arm

and said, don't go.

And he said, I can't.

I wanted to be over.

I'm going to end this now with a bullet.

And the guy just said no.

And he held him back and he gave him, took a pulled a sugar cube out of his pocket and

he put it in his mouth.

And somehow his love and support and physical, emotional and that sugar cube made it so

Sam didn't go.

And he stayed and he ended up escaping from that camp and surviving that.
