I'm Amy Goodman as we continue our conversation with Karen Howe, author of Empire of AI,

Dreams and Nightmares, in Sam Altman's Open AI.

The House recently passed Trump's so-called big, beautiful budget bill that contained a provision

that would prohibit any state-level regulations of AI for the next 10 years and a major

gift to the AI industry.

Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Green, the extreme conservative from Georgia, has criticized the provision,

even though she voted for the bill.

She wrote online, quote, full transparency, I did not know about this section.

I'm adamantly opposed to this, and it's a violation of states' rights, and I would have

voted no if I had known

this was in there, she said.

To talk about this and much more, we continue our conversation with Karen Howe.

So let's just begin with this bill.

It is astounding.

It is shocked many, even though many others say your job as a congressperson or senator is to actually read

the bill, even though it's a thousand pages. Explain what this provision is and how you believe,

Karen. I mean, you've covered these issues for years for the Wall Street Journal. How it got

in there. Oh my God, how it got in there. I don't know.

I mean, these companies in Silicon Valley, they have been so aggressively pushing for some

kind of approach to just ward off regulation. And this is like the ace in the hole.

I mean, previously, Sam Altman, during the Biden administration, he came to the Senate and testified, and he said, we welcome regulation.
