Summary

Thursday morning felt like we were seeing something we weren't supposed to be seeing… Sean Combs is sitting in his normal spot and the entire defense team fall into formation like soldiers at attention. They make a human force field as they huddle around Sean Combs. Is this a pep talk? What's happening? Through the cracks we can see, Sean Combs, absolutely livid. They stay like that until Father Arun, aka Judge Arun calls for a sidebar in the robing room. Lead counsel, Father Arun, and the court reporter disappear behind the door for 20 mins. Then 30 mins. It’s an hour into the morning and we have yet to start the actual court proceedings - nor can we hear anything that’s going on inside the robing room. Usually the rumors will come and go in the press pews - there’s not that many to go around. But everything about this Thursday is different. With nothing else to do - the press are whispering - ‘Did you hear?’ ‘I don’t know if it’s true’ ‘Kanye West is trying to get into the courthouse’ ‘I heard he’s here to support Diddy’ But this doesn’t make sense because why would Diddy be so viscerally angry to the point that his entire team has to block our view of him? Wouldn’t he want his friend supporting him? Is this why the attorneys have spent so long in the robing room? It all seems a lot deeper than that. Perhaps even darker. A lot of people start to speculate that Kanye might be the Feds next target - he might be who they’re coming after next. Full show notes at rottenmangopodcast.com

It is the 22nd day of court. Father Arun takes the bench at 8.50 in the morning. On a normal day,

0:10.2

there's going to be initial conversations, but within the hour, the witness is going to be brought

0:15.5

back onto the stand. The jurors are going to file in, take their seats. This day, this Thursday, is very different. After taking the

0:23.6

bench, there's a few back and forth between the parties, the prosecutors and the defense team.

0:29.0

And then suddenly, Judge Arun, aka Father Arun, that's what we like to call him, he calls for a sidebar

0:34.4

in the roving room. This is a little weird. So the robing room is like a little side

0:39.1

office. The door is right by the judge's bench in the left far side corner of the courtroom. It's like

0:44.6

right at the very front next to his bench. Normally, he'll call for a sidebar and that's when the

0:50.4

jurors are in the room. So the jurors are sitting, they call for a sidebar, they turn on the

0:54.4

white noise, the lead attorneys will go to the corner of the room and they'll do like a little

0:58.2

football huddle and they'll talk and they don't want the jurors to hear this. Usually when you get

1:03.4

the transcript at the end of the day, however, it will have the sidebar unless it's sealed. Now, the jurors are not in the room. The witness is not in the room.

1:13.0

And he's saying, I don't want the press and the public. Nobody can hear this. We need to go into

1:18.8

the robing room. Does that mean that there's no transcript of it either? It's going to be sealed.

1:25.9

There's about, like, I think, 35 pages that are sealed.

1:30.3

And this all takes place in the robing room.

1:32.4

They're in the robing room for a very long time.

1:35.6

So Father Arun, the stenographer, the court reporter, they disappear.

1:40.3

Because even if it's sealed, it still has to be on the record.

1:43.4

Oh.

1:43.9

Now, the court reporter and the lead council from both sides, they disappear into the roving room.

1:50.0

One discussion turns into two.
