Kaiser patients should check their appointments from tomorrow with a possible strike on the

way.

I'm David Brancaccio in New York, workers at one of the country's largest non-profit

health systems appear headed for a strike tomorrow, Kaiser Permanente in a coalition of

unions representing nurses, administrative workers and others, have been negotiating

for a new contract since April, the unions say the sides are far apart.

If a strike happens, patients in California, seven other states in D.C., would be affected.

Marketplace's Nova Sofo is here now, Nova, Kaiser serves a lot of people.

It does indeed, about 13 million members to be exact, and the network, more than 200,000

employees, and the Kaiser Permanente network as well, about 75,000 of them could strike.

That's a bit less than half, of course.

Both sides do say they are making some progress in negotiations, but apparently not enough.

Doctors want parraises that are at about twice the rate of what Kaiser is offering currently.

Another big issue is understaffing.

The unions say staffing levels are unsafe, and as a consequence, workers have seen patients
