Hello and welcome to your Dead To Me, a history podcast for people who just don't like

history really or it's people who forgot to learn any at school.

My name is Greg Jenner, I'm a public historian, author and I am the chief nerd on the BBC

comedy show Horrible Histories.

I spend my days ladling massive dollops of history into people's ears like some sort

of Maverick canteen worker.

So, how does this podcast work?

Well, every episode I'm joined by an expert historian who's devoted years to boning up on

their history and a comedian who's devoted years to making jokes about bones.

Today we are dishing the darts on two people from history who are extraordinary but you

might not have heard of them.

Justinian and Theodora, Empress and Emperor of the mighty Byzantine Empire.

And to help me do that I'm joined by two very special guests.

In History Corner, he's an actual rock star of history with a ridiculous globe trotting

career.

He's professor of global history at University of Oxford.

He's the director of the Oxford Centre for Byzantine Research and he's the author of

the million-selling mega bestseller The Silk Roads and New History of the World.
