sits down with Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute in Boston.

They discussed the First Amendment, hate speech, the Citizens United decision, and other

free speech cases.

Justice. Justice, welcome to the Senate. This is the chamber that you helped to create. You've talked about your time with Senator Kennedy and you've talked about how impressed you were that you and

your counterparts from the Republican side would get together to discuss substantive

policy ideas. Tell the audience why when you were there you think the Senate worked.

Well we were there.

Senator Kennedy wanted it to work and so to the others.

So when I started as Chief Counsel, I'd been teaching at

Harvard and I came down there and the first thing he did is he brought me into Allen Simpson's

office and said, Allen, if you have any problems with the Judiciary Committee call

Steve and he met it so he introduced me to the Republicans as well as the

Democrat and the thing was supposed to work every Every morning, Ken Fiedberg, who was on, you know,

working with me, and Emory Sneaton, who was Thurman's

chief person, every morning we would meet for breakfast and we'd plan the day.

There's no surprises.
