We had an antique family clock all my life.

One of those old French mechanical ones with weights.

It came from my father's side of the family. He wouldn't say it out loud, but you could tell he really loved that clock.

When my father died in the hospital, my mom and I got home and looked at the family clock. The clock had stopped exactly at the time of my father's passing.

Now nothing was wrong with the clock. The weights were up and everything should have been working.

It just stopped ticking at exactly 835. I'm not generally a religious

person but that was definitely odd. Exactly one year later on the first anniversary of my father's

death, the clock stopped again at five past half nine.

Up until I was maybe six years old, my family and I lived in a very old house. It was supposedly

built in the late 1700s. I remember there was a walkup attic that was attached to the

bathroom in the main hallway upstairs. It was a pretty big bathroom and inside was another door that had a staircase leading to the attic.

It was a basic, pretty musty, dusty wooden attic except for the fact that there were these old rusty thick chains

attached to a large beam in the attic. I was very curious about them and even at a

young age I made the distinction that these were used to shackle people. As I got older, I came to believe they were used on slaves or a slave, despite this being in the north.

Another odd thing about the house was that me and my sister's doors to our rooms had locks on the outside.
