Summary

Chammah investigates the cop at the centre of the story – James Holland is so celebrated as an interrogator that he’s known in the media as ‘the serial killer whisperer.’ He’s a leading member of that legendary and storied police force, the Texas Rangers. Chammah traces Holland’s steps as he starts trying to close a cold case which has gone unsolved for more than a decade: the murder of a woman named Bobbie Sue Hill. The trail is faint but Holland follows it doggedly: a dead-end suspect, a single witness, and finally a forensic sketch which leads him to Driskill’s door. At some point, my parents took me to the Alamo where I stood in this old stone fortress and heard about how our Texan forefathers battled Mexico for independence.

Except they aren't my forefathers. My mom is from Connecticut and my dad is from Syria.

So, even before I was aware that the Texas Rangers were a real police force, I knew the name, evoked excitement and adventure and a sense of grandeur.

2:10.0

And this is probably one of the reasons why I was so riveted by Larry Driscoll's claim that he'd given a false confession to a Texas Ranger.

2:20.0

I'd always wanted to know more about the real Rangers. Now I had to know more.

2:30.0

It's about a three-hour drive north from my home in Austin to Fort Worth.

2:36.0

I'd done that drive countless times and always seen the same sign just off the highway in Waco before you get to the football stadium.
