And on this episode, I'm going to be talking about the murder of Gary Ruby.

Today we're heading to one of the most exclusive gated communities in

Hawaii, a place where million-dollar homes look out over turquoise water, and where in early

2022 a secret relationship ended in a crime so shocking that even veteran detectives were left shaken.

This is the story of 73-year-old Gary Ruby and the younger man who not only took his life,

but tried to take his home, his car, and his very identity. Gary Ruby was a retired man enjoying a comfortable

life in Hawaii Loa Ridge, a gated enclave outside Honolulu. He was known for being private,

but those who did know him described him as friendly and open-hearted.

In January of 2022, Gary connected online with a man named Juan Barron, just 23 years old, 50 years his junior.

Police filings and later court documents confirm they met through an

online dating platform. In late February, Gary emailed his brother, telling him he'd met a new

love interest named Juan, who was, quote unquote, significantly younger. It was a short update,

almost casual, but it would turn out to be the last personal communication Gary's family ever

received from him. Sometime after that email, the relationship took a dark turn. According to the probable cause affidavit,

Juan told police that during a sexual encounter, Gary disclosed that he was HIV positive.

Juan's own confession says this revelation triggered a violent reaction.

He strangled Gary with a belt in the master bedroom, then moved the body into a standalone

bathtub.

In an attempt to stage a suicide, he slit Gary's wrists with a kitchen knife.

What happened next showed both calculation and chilling disregard for human life.
