The disappearance of Dennis Martin. The camping trip began The An architect took the day off so he could have three days with his father and two sons to celebrate Father's Day.

They went camping in the Smoky Mountains.

The Martins camped Friday night in Russell Field at the edge of the Appalachian Trail.

Dennis and Douglas made friends with two boys from Alabama who were camping with their parents.

Ironically, their names were Carter Martin II, age 11, and Douglas Martin, age 9.

The two Martin families have never met before and are not related.

Saturday morning on June the 14th 1969, the two Martin families hike together

about two and a half miles east to Spence Field a large almost level

clearing at 4,800 feet of elevation. The field is carpeted with thick grass and a few sparse clusters of scrub trees.

Both Martin families plan to camp there on Saturday night.

It had a hiking shelter which was welcome because the day was very hot and rain appeared likely.

At 4 p.m. the four Martin boys were playing around the hiking shelter near the Anthony Creek Trailhead.

Dennis's father and several other adults were seated in a grassy spot watching them.

They saw the boys split up and run in different directions towards the clumps of trees.

All the boys except Dennis slipped up in front of the adults making noises intending to scare them.

When Dennis did not appear, his father became concerned and questioned the other boys.

Dennis's brother Douglas explained that the boys had planned to slip up on the adults and scare them.

Dennis was supposed to slip up from behind because he was wearing a red t-shirt which could be seen very easily.

Within three to five minutes,

William Martin began calling his son's name.

There was no response.
