Does strength training actually make you faster? On this episode of the Ask a Cycling Coach podcast, presented by TrainerRoad, Coach Jonathan Lee digs into data from over 89,000 cyclists to find out, plus how many weekly sessions hit the sweet spot and why women may see double the benefit. Then we tackle two more listener questions using TrainerRoad's data. Can climbing alone make you faster, or is structured training the real key? And if you train at altitude, do your fitness gains come slower? Jonathan also shares behind-the-scenes from Unbound's brutal conditions and his Leadville prep with a sub-20-pound Epic 9 build.
Whether you're chasing more watts, a higher FTP, or your next big gravel or MTB goal, this data-driven episode helps you train smarter and get faster.

| 0:00.0 | Does strength training actually make you a faster cyclist? |
| 0:02.8 | It's a great question because last week we just did a whole episode with Dialed Health's |
| 0:07.0 | Derek Teal all about strength training and if it makes you faster and how to implement it into your training. |
| 0:12.0 | And we've advocated for it in the past. |
| 0:14.4 | But somebody wrote in after last week's episode and said, with all this talk about strength training, |
| 0:18.3 | is that something you could look into in your dataset? Does strength training actually make you faster? Super fair question. We looked |
| 0:25.6 | into data from over 89,000 athletes to see if there was any sort of correlation between |
| 0:30.9 | improvements and fitness with athletes that did strength training. And if there's a certain amount |
| 0:35.2 | of strength training workouts you should do every week, that is the right one that will make you faster so that's a really interesting one then we're going to look into another question that might have been a trolling question but sometimes it's fun to indulge the trolls and you get some really good learnings from it it's a person that said forget all the training details i just climb 500,000 feet a year and now I drop everyone on the group ride. We were talking about structured training when this person put this comment in, so I'm sure they're saying, forget about structured training, just climb more. So does climbing alone make you faster? We'll look into that too. And the last one that we'll look into is, if train at altitude do your gains come slower this came |
| 1:12.3 | from a person that wrote in a comment that said since i've moved to elevation i just feel like i see |
| 1:17.5 | slower improvements and they wanted to ask the question is that actually the case when you look at a |
| 1:23.3 | big group of athletes so we're going to answer that one too before we we get into that, though, I do want to say congratulations to everybody that did |
| 1:31.3 | and towed the line at Unbound last weekend, whether you did the XL or whether you did |
| 1:36.5 | the 25-miler. |
| 1:37.8 | I think everybody had crazy conditions. |
| 1:40.9 | Just absolutely crazy. |
| 1:42.5 | I was there on the ground helping some folks out and uh i rode the |
| 1:46.9 | course some of the course on friday i rode about a hundred ks of the course on saturday uh when they |
| 1:53.4 | were racing just at the far north end while everyone was down in the south end and um my gosh a couple |
| 1:59.4 | things really quick uh and sorry we'll get into the data stuff really soon, but maybe some behind the |
| 2:03.8 | scene stuff that's interesting. |
| 2:05.2 | I can't express to you how sharp those rocks are. |
