I remember climbing the rickety ladder to the attic as my cousins giggled below me,

trying not to look down as every step propelled me further into the smell of insulation and old books.

The attic hatch was old and spring-loaded, and a few of them had to hold on to it so it wouldn't slam shut behind me.

I remember their taunts as I stood at the top, trying not to chicken out as the darkness enveloped me.
