Now, let's go back to Beirut, Lebanon, on June 9, 1985.

Around 6.30 that evening, Professor Thomas Sutherland arrived at the Beirut International Airport.

Sutherland was the dean of the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon,

a job he'd held since 1983, and the entire time he'd been there, the country had been in conflict.

Since 1975, Lebanon had been torn apart by a complex, multifaceted civil war.

Numerous militias and armies clashed for control of the country.
