Why not approach his agent and himself and negotiate moving his opt-out up a year?

He would have done what the union wanted in taking the highest offer. He'd be a year younger enhancing his chance to land another mega deal. So great. The socks would have $150 million to play with. Let me stop you. I think it's a brilliant idea. I doubt you can do it. Football is the only league where you can rip up a contract and do that. football you can rip up a contract at any time and rewrite the rules and rewrite the terms. And that's why football, that's why the salary cap is a joke because the contracts are a joke. In every other sport, once a figure on a contract is guaranteed, it's guaranteed you can't alter it. So I don't know this for a fact, but I would just assume that you're not allowed to rewrite a contract and change an option year. Yeah, even if both sides agree to it. You can't do it. There's got to be a, you know, look, they ran into some of this with A-Rod. There's always a mechanism there where somehow you get to make everybody whole. And in that case, I don't think you can because you're taking away guaranteed dollars. You can trade them if he wants out that bad. Correct. I'm sure he has a no trade or even if whatever. You can trade him and the $31 million a year is ridiculous except the team trading form. It would be what would amount to a rental except unless he decides to opt in, then you're on the hook for the rest of that contract.

He needs to opt out. The first thing he needs to do is pitch well. Right, exactly. If he pitches well, he will opt out because everyone who's had one of those clauses has opted out. Every one. It's like nine for nine in the history of the league and the history of those contracts. So the only reason he would opt in is if he's really banged up. So if he stays healthy, he's going to opt out.
