Summary

Former President Donald Trump is visiting Capitol Hill today, where he is set to meet with members of both chambers. Yes, there’ll be chatter about a 2025 agenda and an attempt to rally Republican support for his campaign. But behind the scenes, there’s tension as the GOP’s slim House majority is making it hard for Speaker Mike Johnson to deliver for Trump — whether the issue is impeaching Joe Biden, defunding Jack Smith or kneecapping prosecutors investigating the former president. Congress reporter Anthony Adragna joins Playbook co-author Rachael Bade to discuss all that and more. All of that, and the rest of the news you need to know today.

Hey, good morning. I'm Playbook co-author Rachel Bade. It's Thursday, June 13th, and here's

0:11.4

what's driving the day. It's going to be quite a zoo on Capitol Hill today with Donald

0:15.9

Trump huddling with Senate and House Republicans. It is a chance for the former president

0:19.9

to unite the party behind him,

0:21.8

heading into a contiguous election year. But he'll also be talking about what comes next should

0:27.3

Republicans take control of all of Washington this fall. And here to walk us through all this is my

0:34.1

colleague, our congressional reporter, Anthony on Dragna. Good morning, Anthony.

0:38.3

Good morning. Thank you for having me.

So what do we know so far about this circus that's going to be on the hill today?

0:46.5

I think circus is the right word.

0:48.7

The former president's going to be on the House side this morning.

0:52.2

And then we'll be over with Senate Republicans in the afternoon.

0:56.0

I think one of the interesting things to note is there are some members who previously voted to

1:01.2

either impeach or convict him, who've indicated that they plan to attend this meeting.

1:06.1

So that's kind of an interesting evolution from 2020, certainly.

1:10.6

And even folks like Mitch McConnell,

1:11.9

who did not support convicting the president over his role in the events of January 6th,

1:17.4

but has certainly had a very icy relationship with him since that point, are planning

1:22.7

to be in attendance. So I think we're going to see a pretty decent cross section of the Republican conference, at least attending these meetings, whether or not they actually engage with the president. I think we'll have to wait and see.

1:34.6

Yeah, that, I mean, McConnell being in the same room as Trump is just, ugh, to be a fly on the wall on that. And there's a couple of senators who are skipping, though, it sounds like.

1:45.2

Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins.
