Summary

Gene and guest cohost Curt Collins present Charles Lear, author of “The Flying Saucer Investigators.” The book is a whirl of history, about the people involved in the mystery of the flying saucers, mostly the investigators, but also the witnesses, some of whom were profoundly affected. The period covered is what has been called “The Golden Age of Flying Saucers,” which begins in 1947, after the sighting that year by businessman pilot Kenneth Arnold, and ends in 1969, with the termination of the U.S. Air Force’s investigation, which existed for most of its duration as “Project Blue Book. Lear’s main interests in the UFO subject are in the documented history the phenomenon has spawned and the people who investigate it, as this book reflects. Charles’ other interests are geology and paleontology and his familiarity with science and its disciplines informs his approach to the UFO subject. He also writes a UFO blog for Podcast UFO.

So, neighbors, in doing a show about the flying saucer investigators, a new book book by our guest Charles Lear, and our guest

0:39.7

co-host is Kurt Collins. In doing this book, I was thinking of people I knew over the years,

0:45.2

and I'm thinking of the time that I met Charles Burlitz. Now, that's kind of after the book that

Charles did, Charles Lear, rather than Charles Berlitz, who's no longer with us.

And I was thinking here of a time I did a TV show with him,

1:00.7

and he was looking for the annotated edition of the case for the UFO,

1:07.4

which I happened to have, and I loaned it to him.

1:09.9

And he decided to ask me about material he wanted for his book, The Philadelphia Experiment.

1:16.4

So he had many, many lunches, which he paid for because he could.

1:21.7

No money, just lunches.

1:23.6

And a few times I visited him at his home in Glen Cove, New York, and his office was a converted ship's cabin.

1:32.9

Fascinating.

1:34.2

Very cool. That sounds amazing.

1:37.2

He was definitely a character.

1:39.3

And I guess partly the blame for the Roswell legend because he co-wrote the book with William Moore on that.

1:45.3

But that will be a topic for our premium show after the power cast because Kurt has a really

1:51.9

fascinating piece on his blue, blurry line sight about it. Instead, the Flying Saucer

1:57.5

investigators focuses on the people of the early days.

2:03.6

Charles, first, you're not related to the other leaders, are you?
