Good Thursday morning, I'm Jake Sherman, and welcome to your Politico Playbook Audio Briefing.

The following things happened in just one single week.

Donald Trump scheduled a listening session on police reform.

He had staff working feverishly behind the scenes to craft an executive order to address systemic ills and law enforcement.

His team signaled they were interested in working with Tim Scott on his reform effort,

but he also defended a couple of cops who shoved the 75-year-old activist and defended the honor

of dead Confederate generals for whom U.S. military bases have been named.

Donald John Trump is torn, torn between the impulse to speak and cater his base,

and the demands of governing a multiracial country in the throes of unprecedented turmoil and upheaval.

He seems generally uncertain of his place in the moment and in the broader history of our country.

He seems eager to sign an executive order and dispense with the racial debate roiling the nation.

He would like to return to a normal

that most people believe no longer exists. Large scale rallies, he has one scheduled in Tulsa for June

10th. Fundraisers, he has one tonight in Dallas and summer vacations. He's going to his golf course

in New Jersey tonight. VP Mike Pence visited a Trump Pence campaign office and posted a photo of the

staff standing shoulder to shoulder without masks, an image they later deleted after an outcry.

Trump seemed singularly focused on economic indicators like the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the unemployment rate and seems to have difficulty grappling with intangibles, like whether minorities in this country feel valued and included.

It's almost the mirror image of Barack Obama, who tended to

downplay hard facts, but focus almost intently on the arc of America. Some news this morning,

Sergio Gore, a longtime aide to Rand Paul, will be the chief of staff to the Trump Victory

Finance Committee. Driving the news today, Nancy Pelosi will give her news conference at 1045. Kevin
