Summary

Gene and guest cohost Tim Swartz present Texas-based cryptozoologist Michael Mayes, who has investigated sightings of both out-of-place known animals and those that may, or may not, exist for the past 15 years. The discussion will focus on such topics as the way pop cultural influences have made it more difficult to seriously study Big Foot. Mayes has appeared on numerous podcasts and radio programs and on the television show "The Lowe Files" on the A&E network. Michael blogs at the Texas Cryptid Hunter and is author of the illustrated children's book, "Patty: A Sasquatch Story," "Shadow Cats: The Black Panthers of North America," and his most recent book: "Valley of the Apes: The Search for Sasquatch in Area X." He is also a sitting board member for the North American Wood Ape Conservancy, one of the major organizations that examines such phenomena.

for the past 15 years.

1:21.5

Now we know lots of species of animals are becoming extinct all the time. So is there any connection with that, Michael?

1:30.3

Maybe peripherally. Mainly I'm looking and involved in what would typically be considered

1:39.3

a cryptid, you know, an animal that, you know, the very existence of it anywhere at any time is debatable and has yet to be proven.

1:48.6

So that's where I spend the bulk of my time.

1:50.8

Now, there are, there's kind of a subcategory of out-of-place animals that sometimes I had a report a few years ago of an alligator in Cross Plains, Texas, which is way out west, nearly the Abilene.

2:04.7

They had no business being there, no doubt somebody's pet got released, but people were freaking out about, you know, this monster that we're seeing in their stockponds and stuff, and it turned out to be an alligator.

2:16.2

So sometimes the root of these things turned out to be something that's known but out of place.

2:20.9

So we try to get to the bottom of that.

2:23.3

And then I guess there's a third category, which would be animals that existed at one time, but are thought to be extinct now.
