Hello, welcome to today's independent travel podcast with me, Simon Calder. It's Monday the 15th of July, and I'm in the great company of my excellent colleagues on the travel desk at the Independent, because today we have to address the critical issue of Europe, where is cash still king?

0:24.5

And that's because I've been travelling in the past couple of weeks through Greece, Croatia,

0:29.4

Italy, Switzerland, Germany, France.

0:31.9

And I've got different answers to that question.

1:22.2

I can because it's actually quite memorable because I don't use it.

1:26.1

On our girls holiday to Croatia last year,

1:29.0

we did have to find a cash point for things like cabs and just tips, restaurants, a lot of things

1:37.9

that it was very different to the year before we'd been to Malaga in Spain and found contactless

1:43.1

and Revoluted cards was fine,

1:44.9

but in Croatia, yeah, it was a bit different.

1:47.1

I certainly found that in terms of getting public transport.

1:51.4

You even go to a big bus station for a three-hour bus ride and they say,

1:56.0

no, of course, you've got to pay cash.
