Today's story comes from Julius Gunter.

I grew up in Hanover, which is a rural parish in Western Jamaica in a single-parent home with three

siblings and my mother. Life was very difficult for us. My mother had to make some tough choices

including sending my older sister to school while I stayed home because she didn't have enough money to send both of us.

Most Jamaican children go to school for the first time at age 2 or 3.

I went to school for the first time when I was older than five years old and I struggled to learn because of my early setbacks.

So much so that at age 11 I was still unable to read. I struggled in school

with a deep sense of loss and shame and humiliation and many of the teachers were not very

patient, not very kind. In my second year in primary school a young teacher

trainee who was sent to my school from the Ministry of Education decided to start a special reading program for

struggling students. I was the first student to sign up and I was the last student who was left in the program.

The teacher was incredibly kind to me. She was patient, she was creative. She did not ask anything

of me except that I work hard and believe in myself and my reading improved significantly.

Years later after I graduated university I returned to the school to ask the principal and teachers who were there

while I was studying if they could give me her full name and tell me where to find her and no one could tell me.
