and my guest today is one of the most admired veterans

of the stage and screen, Judith Light.

Perhaps best known as Angela Bauer on Who's the Boss, a primetime hit on

ABC through much of the 80s and into the early 90s, she's also a two-time daytime Emmy

winner for One Life to Live in 1980 and 1981, a two-time Tony winner for

other desert cities in 2012 and the assembled parties in 2013, and a four-time

primetime Emmy nominee for ABC's Ugly Betty in 2007

for Amazon's transparent in 2016 and 2017 and as of last month for FX's the assassination of Johnny Versace, American Crime Story,

in the category of Best Supporting Actress in a limited series or TV movie.

That comes thanks to a brief but stunning turn on Ryan Murphy's

acclaimed limited series as Marilyn Miglin, the fragrance entrepreneur and

TV saleswoman whose husband Lee was, like Versace, a victim of serial killer Andrew Kunanin.

Over the course of our conversation at the offices of the Hollywood reporter,

the 69-year-old and I discussed a wide range of topics, among them.

How her talent and ambition took her from New Jersey

to Broadway by way of a host of other places, but how, once she got to the Great White

Way in the mid-70s, things didn't go quite as planned. How, at two of her lowest moments thereafter,

she agreed to do things that she had sworn she would never do, namely a soap opera and a sitcom, as a result wound up making her name on

one life to live from 1977 through 1983 and then on who's the boss from 1984
